[ILUG] Is a fqdn really necessary?

On a stand-alone server, local lan XP & Linux (no domain)
is it really necessary to call a Samba Server
"server.frank.com" or will just "server" do.

I'm asking because, when I install Linux & set up as "fqdn",
I can't connect to it from winxp,
if I use "server" during setup I can?

Couldn't find relevant article on Google.
