[ILUG] upgrading suse (9.2 -> 9.3)

this is more a point of info than any request for same.

recently upgrade a box as above.

some gripes, xmms didn't work and sound didn't work.

Firefox was now know to the system so i got rid of the manual install.
Bad idea. None of the plugins work so i have to redo them. Also,
firefox has a different (non default theme) that i don't like and
can't seem to delete the suse and other theme or even select the
firefox standard theme as the default. But maybe i messed up this

Horrible.

So I'm seriously looking at other distros for everything.

Anyway, To solve the above issues.

Sound:

I could change the control centre and/or YAST config to get it to
restart the sound system and all was ok.

I got these messages :

"The number of currently running cards doesn't match the number of
configured cards in your configuration files.
Try to restart the sound system ?"

And on boot :

"Starting sound driver:intel8x0 FATAL : Error inserting snd_intel8x0 (
lib dir... ) : Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter. See
dmesg)"

Dmesg show it doesn't like the joystick param.

So I didn't like restarting the sound on every boot i messed around with things.

I deleted /etc/asound.state and /etc/modprobe.d/sound and then ran
'alsaconf store'

It found two cards for some reason, the intel8x0 and a 'legacy' one. I
picked the intel and followed through.

On next boot i had sound.

Now for xmms/amarok/mp3.

I still haven't gotten xmms or amarok to play mp3, i may try del and
re-installing them or some web searched, but i got kaffeine working
with mp3, mpeg, and wmv even i think (for those annoying peolpe that
send me such ;) ) and it also plays dvd now though i haven't tried.
