the list is called ilug @ linux.ie where ilug stands for Irish Linux 
Users Group

This is true, but ...  

I believe the primary argument keeping the list open for posts from 
non-subscribers is to allow a linux user to post without subscribing.

Subscribing to the list is also one of two ways (register with the 
secretary is the other) to become a member of ILUG.
