Hi Ian,

I don't know if this is any help to you or not. I too had been caught
out by the box stating that it was a hardware modem and that it worked
with Linux. I now know better. No cheap(ish) PCI modem that I have come
across is really a proper hardware modem.

When I was running Mandrake 9.2 on my 233MHz PC, I had no problem
compiling the driver for the 536ep chip set - once I had the
kernel-source installed and had recompiled my kernel. However I remember
wanting to upgrade to a more modern Mandrake distro but not being able
to do so as there was no driver available for Linux 2.6.
(from looking at
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=977&OSFullName=Linux*&lang=eng&strOSs=39&submit=Go%21
the appropriate drivers have since become available.)
Since then, I've moved on to using a better-specced PC and now have ADSL
so I can leave those worries behind. Though I have to say that my
experiences resulted in me becoming opposed to hardware that can only be
used with proprietary / binary-only drivers.

Best of luck,
Anthony
