If this was a once-off, then yeah, that would work. However, what i'm
really looking for is a simple method that i can document for users so
that they can easily set up authenticaion for parts of their sites. I
have no intention of doing custom apache reconfiging for this. Too much
of a headache.

I didn't think this would be that complex to do, it seems (to me at
least) to be a fairly simple requirement. Got no replies to a post to
the apache users list tho. So maybe i'm SOL. Ah well.
