Well an alternative approach would be to use any grub boot media (i.e. a grub
boot floppy or cd) and then to use grubs command line to enter:
chainloader(hd0,0)+1
The above is if your windows partition is the first partition (the ,0) on the
first drive (hd0).
Once you have booted your normal windows you can restore the bootloader from
there).
Shameless plug for my favourite cd ... Kanotix uses grub for booting and has
an extra menu with some preset options for doing things like this (so it's
easy to get the syntax right even if your partition numbers still might need
working out). I also has the tool chntpw which can be used to set user
passwords (though I've never used it and also I've never read anything saying
if it works or not for windows versions other than nt/2000 though I guess it
does).
