I just had a look through your followups to this thread. I found
mostly opinions, not facts. For example, this post
http://www.linux.ie/lists/pipermail/ilug/2005-June/025976.html stated 1
opinion, and 1 unsubstantiated remark (can't call it either fact or
opinion really). The only other followup to the thread from you, that I
can find (under this thread) had only 1 useful remark (about failing
ebuilds). So, all in all, you haven't provided that many "facts" for us
to decide from.

Also, I haven't seen anyone spreading BS about Gentoo. I've seen plenty
of remarks about why someone stopped using it, or doesn't want to use
it. These are all opinions, and are not for you or anyone else to
change. If you want to argue with them, then do so with substantiated
facts.

Yes, but not that argument alone. I'm not bothered at the moment reading
through the whole thread to find substantiated arguments and give a
score on it. Most of what I saw was "Binary package managers do X better
than emerge / ebuild" being rebuffed with "That's bullshit" or similar.
Like I said, I'm not going looking for the offending posts -- if you're
that interested, you can do it.

Debian packages are certainly compiled from source, but they're then put
in central repositories so each Debian user who installs that package
gets the same thing. Secondly, it's already been pointed out elsewhere
the number of different permutations of USE flags that can be used for a
few Gentoo packages. This can lead to _vast_ differences in the binary
being run on different machines, even those of the same architecture.
Obviously, this means less people run the same as you on their machine,
and it's less tested than if a single package is built and run
everywhere. Lastly, my comment about re-inventing the wheel was aimed at
building your own package repository as opposed to using one that's
already built, not about source compiles.

My own personal opinion about running Gentoo based servers is that it's
just too much hassle. The install takes longer than my distro of choice,
it takes longer to upgrade and I just can't see the benefits of it over
using binary packages.
