Years of using == lots of times trying alternate superblocks, during
which, as I said,it NEVER has worked for me, to the extent that I no
longer expect it to - but I would still try.

I'm pleased for you - seriously. Obviously I've always been unlucky
enough that when the primary superblock was screwed, so were all the
others.

Indeed - which is why I went to the trouble of explaining how to do it,
despite my personal lack of joy with the procedure. Bottom line - you
can't beat good backups esp. given the unreliability of current low end
disks (and I'm sure DoC is privy to very solid information about disk
reliability, but if he told us, he'd have to shoot us, and it's rather
hard to shoot an entire mailing list so . . .)
