Its sure worth a go, and its been (at best) 50-50 for me. Suppose it
depends on what exactly went wrong to the volume.

These days I think prevention is better than cure, so I force the system
to fsck every n reboots - whether they be gracefull shutdowns or
otherwise.

For normal ext3 volumes:
tune2fs -c10 /dev/hda1
For LVM Volumes:
tune2fs -c10 /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00

Will force them to be fscked every 10 reboots.
But as Niall and others have said, there is no substitute for (verified)
backups. (I will be around soon to pick up those pesky tapes Niall)
