"This 'kernel-stripping' was quite a challenge, since we were working with
Knoppix, which is KDE. Further, we built right into the kernel as much of
the system as we could -- Gnome is part of the kernel, in other words. By
doing that, too, we were able to save a huge amount of space.
But, the trade-off is that you cannot upgrade the kernel nor Gnome without
totally trashing your installation. What you can upgrade is anything that
doesn't touch the kernel or Gnome. And we added all of the libraries we
