found out that the 39320 scsi device isn't supported properly by the 
aic79xx driver. 39320 presents itself as a RAID device (w HostRaid) -and 
RAID needs to be turned off somehow before the tape can be seen. After 
goiing through bios settings with Dell technicians, we didn't find a way 
to disable RAID.
I also note from an information page on the aic79xx 
(http://people.freebsd.org/~gibbs/linux/)
driver that the 39320 adapter isn't on the list of supported adapters. 
Apparently this adapter is pretty new. The server ordered from dell was 
originally specified with the 39160 adapter, which is supported, and 
this one was substituted when server was delivered. Trying to find out 
if there is a version of aic79xx that does support the 39320 adapter, or 
if I can get a different adapter from Dell.
