Actually, depending on your distro there might be another outside chance
... *some* paranoid distros have a cron-job that runs nightly taking a
snapshot of the file permissions across the system and comparing it
against the previous night - to highlight changes (tripwire rings a
bell)
It *might* have enough information stored somewhere to allow a scripted
recovery.
Reinstall will probably be faster though !
Oh ... and I *hope* this machine isn't currently on an internet
connection!!
