Forget KVim. Never got that working here either.

If it has to be a VI sorta thing, use GVim (http://www.vim.org/). Or XEmacs. 
Or, as others have suggested, use Eclipse IDE for Java development. You could 
also use Sun's own NetBeans IDE (which can be downloaded as a bundle with the 
Java SDK or separate from java.sun.com), which currently does the syntax 
support for Java 1.5 specific things better than Eclipse.
