 reasonable. problem is, this and other boards apparently
 contain programmed firmware (a “general”-purpose processor
 plus memory &tc), and hence (design permitting) can present
 whatever interface they like to the bus / main-CPU(s);
 i.e., to the driver. the back-end logic needn't matter
 a hoot, and can vary from model to model whilst the
 interface remains “the same”. so guessing at a driver
 based only on back-end logic can lead to confusing results
 when there is intervening “smarts” closer to the bus.

 disclaimer: I am not familar with either the boards or
     chips specifically mentioned; only extrapolating from
     the description and previous experience.
cheers!
