Just a note to say that I now have all my WiFi cards working,
though I am still not entirely clear why one worked and two did not.

In any case, for some reason the MODE was set to Ad-hoc,
and setting it to Managed seems to have solved the problem.

I also noticed that the firmware versions on the cards were different.
I guess I must have updated one (to version 8.10) under Windows.
This was the card that always worked.
