I'm not sure its the best way, but I'm using ipac-ng to create my
iptables rules for traffic monitoring, it works fairly well, and you get
a useful tool with ipacsum for graphing, creating images or just printing 
out basic information - 

mail:~# ipacsum |grep total
  total in all                                    :             40T
  total out all                                   :            832G
