Yes, it worked nicely. I gave it a whirl. I'm annoyed with myself 
actually, as it took rather less time to try the experiment that it did 
to type the blooming mail to the list :-) However, someone (you know 
who you are) suggested that  eth0:X  wasn't a valid dev specifier to 
route.
