With respect, the discussion is not between top and bottom posting per se.
I think the latter might better be called something like "trimmed inline
posting".
Those who use "top posting" tend to leave the entire previous mail(s)
underneath their post - this would be one of its disadvantages. Those who
use "trimmed inline posting" will remove all that is not being directly
replied to and post underneath the relevant lines (eg this email). If the
reply text is not visible on the first screen, it is because an awful lot
of text is being quoted.
You'll also find that people who use "trimmed inline posting" will
invariably have read the full email. It's nigh on impossible to reply in
this way without reading it.
