I studied/worked in UCD for several years, using Linux for about 5.
Never had any particular problems. Register the MAC address with
network services and then DHCP will pull down all the necessary
information.

Formerly, the network was open to the world at large and had fixed IP
addresses. Now it's mostly floating IPs and firewalled against
incoming connections. Staff or Postgrads (with a staff-member acting
as contact person) can request a fixed IP or can ask to have ports
opened in the firewall to make their systems accessible to the outside
world. The folks handling this end of things seem to be pretty good
(e.g. I was contacted about ssh some time back when there was an ssh
worm on the loose, after assuring them that even though my version
number looked old, that it was actually a secure patched version from
Debian Woody, they were happy to leave me enabled and even added the
information about back-ported patches to the advisory webpage).

I never used this either, but from what I've heard it may work without
registration.

Michael
