The server that I ran at my $former_employer was based on Debian Woody,
and was a FTP mirror server for all Linux distros you can think of. It's a
while back now, but I think I had just over 200 ISO images shared out with
nfs and rsync.
Every one of these ISO images were loopback mounted to allow users to
access individual files within.

That's puzzling. Not sure what is happening. Perhaps udev doesn't know how
to create more than 32 loop devices. Or perhaps it doesn't even care?

Never say never. Those handy bootable business card CD's are not too large
in size, and once you start collecting them you can't stop :-)
I started mounting all of them on the above mentioned server - just
because I could. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with having all
ISO's for RedHat 6.2 (even source CD's) loop mounted and shared over NFS
when Fedora Core 1 is out. It's handy just in case someone needs it. (This
was a couple of years ago).
The strange thing is that there was always someone that would download
ancient versions - including source ISO's (6 CD's if I remember
