as a matter of interest, have you tried mplayer?  The subject line
suggests it, but indications are that it didn't work, and I'm curious as
to why.

It may need to be recompiled by hand with the realplayer .so's, but
mplayer can indeed support the SMIL and Real protocols -- and is much
better at dealing with a "no-X" environment.

See in particular: mplayer -dumpstream

BTW trplayer is a dead end -- the author(s) no longer maintain it,
and Real have revved the protocols since then, so I really doubt
it'll work.
