Not a solution, but re your comment about sound coming through fine,
but video not doing so: AFAIK VLC will do it's best to keep playing
the stream when it hits bandwidth problem, this often means you'll get
audio through, but no video (it's in the VLC documentation somewhere 
but I forget where).
VLC has some very verbose logging that might help track this down. The
output can be rather cryptic though. Paul's comment on latencies
sounds like it might be close to something. Again, the VLC debugging
output will give you info on dropped/late frames.
