Interesting,
I compiled Xfce last week and had no problems on Dapper Drake AMD64.
The documentation provided here:
http://www.xfce.org/index.php?page=documentation&lang=en
is pretty good and tells you the order to build each component in.
Also helpfully lets you know what dependencies it requires.
Although if you dont have a window manager installed already i can
imagine it would be a bit of a pain reading those instructions through
a text based browser.
