Hi Steve,

I did as you said above and whenever I first boot up I get the following
messages:

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.....
root(hd0,1)
......
[Grub commands are displayed]
.....
....
.....
Uncompressing Linux.... OK, booting the kernel
[42949472.930000] hdb: drive not ready for command
ALERT! /dev/md1 dies not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.01 (Debian 1:1.01-4ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
#[42949783.280000] hda: drive not ready for command
[42950093.980000] hda: drive not ready for command

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, when I reboot the second time, all works fine. The above
suggests to me that the drives are dying, but both at the same time???
Unlikely. What do you think? It seems to work on the second boot.

On a side note:
In relation to the initial problem being caused by the swap partition
being the first on the drive. I would have thought that (hd0,0) would
have been the first partition created rather than the first on the
drive. Also, why wouldn't the system recognise that the second partition
was to be mounted as '/' (as was configured in the partitioner?

Cheers for your help so far, it's been very much appreciated.

Sonic
