[ILUG] Alternative filesystems on a DVD

Hi all.

I'm fed up using iso9660 for writing to write-once media, primarily because of file-naming
and path depth restriction. My home directory contains some very deep directories, which
means I can't directly back them up to DVD.

It is possible to create a DVD with an ext3 filesystem on it (I've done so successfully).
But I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

My questions:
1. Is ext3 suitable for long terms storage on a DVD?
2. If not, can someone suggest a more suitable filesystem that doesn't have silly restrictions
on file naming and path depth.

Some brief web research turned up the Wikipedia article on DVD-RAM:

"So while it is possible to use any filesystem you like, only very few perform well on DVD-RAM. 
This is because some file systems frequently over-write data on the disc and the table of contents
is contained at the start of the disc."

However, that's for a read-write medium, so may not be relavant for my planned write-once usage.
