[ILUG] why did KDE H/W(-plugin?) thingie start accessing my CD(-RW) drive?

 NO.
 I addressed that possibility in my post:

   “[ ... ] if I opened the tray, on the next access it closed.
    (the tray does not normally close; in the past I've accidently
    left it open for days.)"

 it _is_ NEW.  I'm 100% certain on that.  the thing
 I do not know is how “new” new is.  I _think_ I can
 put a c.90 day bound on it, but am not 100% certain.
