I don't know that init.d scripts are all that precious (and the  
scripts themselves, or derivatives thereof, will stay with any  
replacement system). However, people are attached to working systems.  
Perhaps the systems are not working as well as they could be in an  
ideal world but at least we're used to how they work. Inertia is a  
powerful force.

Maybe because history shows us that major changes in software very  
rarely work correctly first time.
