I can't help wonder why upstart is continuing on along at this stage. 
There's already two open source projects that solve the majority of the 
problems that upstart has set out to solve. Admittedly Apple's initial 
license for launchd wasn't inductive to community adoption, but that has 
changed. It's mature and working and upstart seems to be a long way from 
either. I don't know too much about SMF but from what I've heard it 
works well.

There's always been an element of "not invented here" with the various 
distros and quite frankly it's distracting and annoying when it comes to 
key platform functionality. Lately it's turning into a pissing contest 
with AIGLX/XGL Luminocity/Compiz etc. I would not be one bit surprised 
of RedHat/Fedora announced a replacement init application that they've 
been working on internally and are now ready for community involvement. 
Same goes for Novel/SuSe.

grumble grumble. And yes, I know that diversity is a key part of the 
open source environment. Sometimes it feels like there's such a waste of 
effort goes on though.
