  | I was thinking more of the server at <http://hetzner.de/> [ ... ]
  | Why is there a union jack at the bottom of the ad, as a matter of interest?

I haven't looked, but that is a common — albeit
poor — convention for "click here for an English
version of this page/site". the reason this is
not a good idea is it's confusing, not everyone
associates country X' flags with language Y, and
sometimes there are people who object to seeing
 X's flag (last one's a poor reason .... ;-\ ).

what's usually suggested is just to say, *in*
 language Y using language Y's script(s), what
is meant. that is, just say: English, Français,
Deutsch, and so on. that's much more obvious
(esp. to people who can read the language,
which is who it's aimed at in the first place!).

cheers!
