[ILUG] Gentoo install

Hi all
I'm attempting my first gentoo 64bit install via a minimal downloaded .iso. 
AMD64 3800+, 1GB RAM etc.
I downloaded the 3rd stage for 86_64 and the portage snapshot but when I went to compile the kernel I got an error:
cc1: error: code model `kernel' not supported in the 32 bit mode 
make[1]:*** [arch/x86_64/kernel/asm-offsets.s] Error 1
make: ***[prepare0] Error 2
The CHOST in the make.conf file is "i386-pc-linux-gnu". I thought this was wron but it said in the docs not to change this, could that be the problem? If so what is thee correct syntax for the AMD64?
