In short, I'm sending mail via SMTP to the outgoing server, using
my correct email address in the From field. Server is accepting the
mail.

Problem: some of my correspondents are ignoring me -- I'm getting
too few replies. Are some of my emails disappearing into the ether?

Suspicious: email to someone at nonexistentdomain.com is accepted
without error by the server.

Could it be, perhaps, that the server is trying (and failing) to
report errors via SMTP to my PC, rather than to my email address?
