I would also expect any immediate problems to show up in the log of
the outgoing SMTP session (but that just has "status=sent" lines),
and later problems to result in a bounce to the sender's address.

*However*, on checking my firewall and taking off the block on
incoming SMTP connections, I see another machine connecting and
sending me error messages as emails. Progress!

I was much happier in the days when I could make a direct SMTP to
the recipient's server, but that fails too often now :-/
