I don't think that it works better, it doesn't return valid, relevant
That's a far worse failure-mode than no-connection, from where I'm
standing at least. I'd far rather get zero results than a nonsense set,
even if it is accompanied by a warning/disclaimer telling me the results
have been altered.
More than just my personal preference though, putting a user-friendly
face on the censorship is what the Chinese Government really want. They
want to improve the user experience too, because it means the
workarounds become less attractive and less widespread, it means they
catch and imprison more people.
