An even better way, presuming the DSL service is delivered via PPPoE 
(which it is for Eircom), is to configure the limited or 
brain-damaged DSL "router" to /not/ do routing, but just bridge the 
PPPoE frames between DSL and your local network, then terminate the 
PPPoE session on a more capable "router" such as your PC.

You'll find then that all the normal documentation on PPPoE, PPP, 
firewalling and port-forwarding for your operating system will apply. 
(indeed, you probably won't need port-forwarding anymore if you have 
just one computer).
