You will want to use a program based on libnjb to have access to the
actual music library:

Be sure not to update to MTP/PlaysForSure firmware as this protocol is
not yet supported. Gphoto2 is making progress but last I checked it's
not quite there yet. (Yes, photo. You read that correctly. MTP is
surprisingly similar to PTP)

This is strange, really. You have an umask set that should help
against that. I remember umask=000 on my last VFAT partition, though.
Note that UTF8 support on a VFAT partition is normally not something
you want as it will make the filesystem case sensitive. This can yield
strange results in windows, which is not case sensitive. (Well, it
actually does a very strange combination of caring and not caring, but
it's not flat out case sensitive, at any rate)
