Agreed...  I have seen something similar to this happen before, but  
it was caused by a corrupt static route entry on a solaris box...  
Still not sure why it caused the wierd arp behaviour, but it did...

Otherwise, I'm at a loss....  Curiousity is killing me though! ;-)
