I've just found one difference: SIZE.
My mean & lean LFS is well under 2 Gigs before Data. It can be kept
below 500MB by using uClibc instead of Glibc. Distributions typically
come out around 4 Gigs with some amount of redundant stuff aboard.
I tried installing Solaris recently, and out of respect for another
horror story, I didn't show it my real hard disk, but slipped in a 4.1
Gigs Seagate one. No go. Even dropping large amounts of Documentation
it's still a 6-7 Gig install, bundled weirdly. You get bison, yacc,
gcc-2.x, gcc-3.4 and several other compilers/languages in one mouse
click, for instance. Xemacs, vim, joe, nano, and a couple of other
editors in another. Who wants Vim _and_ Emacs? No, don't answer that
please.
My first impression of Gnu/linux was that it thought it sat at the
centre of a great multitasking Universe, and that everything revolved
around it.
My first impression of Gnu/Solaris (A lot of gnu stuff there) is that it
thinks it's a supercomputer at the centre of a great multitasking
Universe
