  | Have skimmed this.
  |
  | 1. Don't give up on dvd writing until you try at a very low speed, i.e.
  | 2x or 4x.

whilst it's true I haven't the faintest idea
at what speed the attempts to burn DVD+R DL
were, I also said I needed to get some blank
 DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs (both non-DL). so yes, I'm
clearly attempting to give up burning DVDs.

  | 2. cdrecord gives very good info when asked to (man cdrecord) and will
  | tell you things like dao, tao, etc. it needs /dev/sg0 - read the docs.
  | The guy likes to pretend IDE is actually SCSI. For dvds try growisofs
  | (+r) or dvdrtools (-r). I would actually be surprised if a modern drive
  | does not do TAO.

I hadn't realised this. I did quote the SUSE
 cdrecord(1) man page, which clearly I wouldn't
have done had I read it. thanks for the tip.

  | 3. dvd-r and dvd+r are both available from Lidl (€3.99 for 5). The =
  | dvd+r works for me at 8x. They also have dvd+rw

yes, I shall fly to Ireland immediately to
buy some. again, thanks for the tip.

  | 4. A modern dvd-r only drive is possible but unlikely, especially from
  | the Japanese.

yes, yer right. my stated intention to buy
some blank DVD+R's --- and my attempt to use
some DVD+R DL's --- are both clearly silly.
 thanks for the correction!

a 100% error rate after a skim suggests that
either my writing abilities are lacking, yer
skimming abilities are lacking, or possibly
 both. opinions, please?

cheers!
