The solution isn't to cut out the initial post that others are replying 
to either. And the confusion will come from the user's own settings, and
their wish to not receive non-subscriber posts. The other option is, of
course, to use a decent spam filter configured to your personal setup
(which I do, and see no ILUG spam, apart from what's in my spam folder).

I think the above is a good idea, because at least then the
"subscriber-post only" gang can set their preferences as such, and the
rest can accept everything. Then the work doesn't fall to just Colm, and
further requests for subscriber-only posting can be met with "Change
your receiving options".
