Having installed 64 bit Linux on a couple of boxes, I've come to the  
conclusion that unless you know you need it, you don't. And it seems  
that on machines with < 4GB of RAM, the 64bit kernels may actually be  
slower than 32bit kernels.

If you use a 64bit kernel, the issue with the COnexant modem won't be  
the last you'll run into. Mind you, the majority of the issues are  
with binaries such as that driver, other manufactirers binary  
drivers, Flash etc. and there are those who will argue that you  
shouldn't use those anyway.
