Newer developments make some of this out of date. pdflatex and
geometry.sty for instance.

Absolutely. A good learning curve (i.e. it keeps paying off).

That is not a bad thing.

True, but the GUI WP world depends on being newbie-friendly (and
therefore apparently user-friendly), so it's easy to start doing
stuff but hard to do complex orderly stuff.
