NX was mentioned by a couple of people and I'll second it. I have  
only used it on a couple of occasions when Frank Duignan of this  
parish gave me a test account on a server he had. His server was on  
HEAnet's network so as I was using DSL, DSL was the bottleneck. The  
account I used was configured with KDE and it was amazingly  
responsive - not perceptively different from a remote KDE session  
over a LAN.

I'd certainly suggest giving NX a try, in either its free or payware  
incarnations.
