In that case I guess it comes down to a cross between opinion and personal
preference.

I don't want people to be able to SSH directly into any of my boxen.
Firewalling them out is one line of defense. Configuring the box to only
accept ssh connections from Certain IP's is another. Having no actual IP for
them to connect is my final one.

The only boxes that I would assign a public IP to are ones which provide
public services ( eg my webservers ). Even then, they're mostly loadbalanced
by a content switch, so I assign the public IP to the content switch, and
leave my webservers on the Private (Private IP) network. I'm not under any
illusion that this makes it impossible to crack my systems, but it makes it
that bit harder.
