Um. Despite the tentacles involved I'd say that Active Directory, like 
NIS, X.500 and so on has its place.

Generally the case for such things is where you have an organisation 
larger than you can conveniently fit in one room and need to be able to 
deal with the whole issue of granting access to resources on a network, 
logon from arbitrary workstations and so on.

Having dealt with the NT4 era tools, I reckon AD can only have improved on 
them.

The real question I'd have to the original question would be what you want 
the replacement to do. Some sort of LDAP oriented solution is the usual 
answer to this question, but unfortunately the implementations of LDAP 
frequently seem to be stretching themselves to redefine "arcane".

And NIS, well NIS has its own special tentacles.
