This is probably a million miles from what you want or could be bothered
paying for, but it seems pretty fun and the touch screens are really nice
so that might make the UI appealing.

Since my Dad bought a TomTom and I used it away on holiday, I was curious
and looked into what OS they were running.  One guess required.  There's an
opentom project, which the commercial tomtom guys seem to be fairly happy
with (given they later hired the guys who started opentom and those guys
still maintain a public kernel tree).

You'd probably get a basic wifi mp3 device cheaper of course, but the fact
you can easily hack it and then swap back in the original flash card to use
it as a satnav might appeal to some.
