I have to place a vote here for the slim devices approach. keeping all
the hard stuff in one place (the server) and having a 'slim' device at
the business end.

The Slimserver will stream ok to other devices  but I am using it with 2
squeezboxes (both connected via wifi) and an original slimp3. they will
all happily synchronize.
Stuff like dealing with real audio and other net radio formats happens
at the server end (transcoding on the fly where required to deal with
proprietary crap )
Back end indexing is handled by a single central MySQL server (by
default it uses it's own SQlight setup but can be pointed to a proper
mysql server)
You also get a Central web based interface that can control all devices.

with the dollar where it's currently at the Squeezebox is at a pretty
good price point
