Just want to chip in on the MS project part...

There are alternatives to MS Project, most of them done in Java.
This one (http://sourceforge.net/projects/openproj/) looks very
MS-Projectish. It's Open Source, but still beta (as so many things
these days :-)) I didn't have the chance to test-drive it yet.
Another (also Java) alternative is GanttProject
(http://ganttproject.biz/) which also seems to do most of what MS
Project does -- and apparently it has an import filter for MS Project
files.
