  | I have a couple of RTL-8139C based cards here. It may
  | not be the most interrupt-efficient 10/100 chipset in the
  | world but in my experience it works well and is reliable.
  | One of the cards is in a Pentium 200 MMX machine and was
  | autodetected by Mandrake 9.1 (released March 2003, about
  | a year before SUSE 9.1).

I can confirm SUSE 9.1 autodetected the newly-inserted card
(with an RTL-8139D chipset) with no (apparent) problems.
all available evidence is it's working fine.

the problem now is getting things set up to usefully talk
to the printer (more for testing than anything else).
at the moment, the problem(s) are clearly with my brain,
or rather, my low familiarity at this level of detail with
 modern networking/ethernuttery. so I'm guessing there'll
 be, sometime, yet another follow-up post/questions...? ;-\

cheers!

p.s. thanks to all who've replied, and esp. to Mike Watterson
for reminding that I should also get a switch.
