David,
The first thing I'll suggest is that Fedora Core 3 is, at this
stage, quite an old distribution - I (and I'm sure others here) would
recommend a more modern distribution such as Ubuntu 6.06 or Fedore Core
6.

However, that information doesn't solve your immediate problem.
The Acer Travelmate 242LC is listed on :

http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/acer.html

The modem would seem to be an intel AC97 based soft-modem

0000:00:1e.3 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6
Family) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03)

(something similar should show up in an "lcpci" listing)

if so - you may be in luck - www.linmodems.org points to :
http://developer.intel.com/design/modems/support/drivers.htm as a source
for intel chipset drivers.

As for returning to windows - without knowing details of how you
installed, this may be difficult

Can you post the contents of
	fdisk -l
in a reply, there's a chance you completely overwrote your windows
install on the computer, in which case - the only way back is to
reinstall windows.

Hope this helps
