A mate of mine was recently saying that he reckons you could now do this
(at least in principal) with mutt.  Basically, you keep everything in one
folder and then use the limit command.

  Since mutt 1.5.13 (last August) you can search for something with
        ~(PATTERN)
  and it'll match not only messages matching PATTERN, but the rest of the
  associated thread, too.

I think it should be possible to create "virtual folders" using some hooks
to automate the limits.

If it's over imap or even local maildirs, you'd best have the header
caching turned on.  I haven't tried it and don't know how well or badly it
might perform, it could be very bad.  It's an interesting possibility
though.

I'm well aware mutt is not to everyone's taste UI-wise though.
